Stephen Schintzius Obituary

Stephen “Steve” Schintzius, 78, of Corfu, NY, died of cancer peacefully at home, surrounded by family.

Born in Buffalo, NY, the eldest of four, his love for playing hockey was the most notable part of his academic career. He spent over 50 years in fuel/petroleum sales, first at family business Goetz Energy Corporation in Buffalo, and retired from Rocky Mountain Supply in Belgrade, Montana. He really enjoyed the art and science of sales.

Steve lived around the country in the second half of his life but missed the notable football accomplishments and signature foods of Buffalo/WNY. He loved his time living in and around Bozeman, Montana, where he was known as “the man with the hat,” since he wore his straw cowboy hat everywhere.

His beloved children Kate and Scott report he was most at home driving around in his truck, enjoying the countryside of Southwest Montana, or snoozing while watching golf. Steve leaves a lasting mark on his family and friends. To those who knew him, “The Chief” was a character who loved to tell a joke or a story, made a great mix tape, and was always up for a cold one.

Steve is survived by his daughter, Kate Schintzius of Los Angeles, CA; son Scott Schintzius of Akron, NY; and siblings Susie (Chuck) Stewart and Warren Schintzius. He was preceded in death by parents, Leonard and Rosemary (née Brennan) Schintzius, and brother Roger (Rosemary) Schintzius.

Profound gratitude to Steve’s medical teams at Bozeman Health and University of Rochester for their exceptional care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local Hospice organization. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
