Monsignor Robert Williamson Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rev. Monsignor Robert J. Williamson, a man whose wit and humor left an indelible imprint on everyone he met. Monsignor a humble and intelligent soul, departed from this life on November 1, 2025. His vibrant spirit and enduring legacy of charity and faith will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Monsignor was a native of Kenmore, NY, and his educational journey took him from St. Joseph Collegiate Institute in Kenmore to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, St. Bernard's Seminary in Rochester, NY, and St.John Vianney Seminary in East Aurora, NY. He received his master's degree in Social Work from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Monsignor was ordained by Joseph A. Burke in St. Joseph's New Cathedral in Buffalo on March 17, 1962. After his ordination, Monsignor served as a chaplain for the Boy Scouts and later spent a year on loan to the Diocese of Miami. His dedication to education and faith was the guiding force in his life, shaping him into the remarkable individual he was.

Monsignor's exemplary service to his community was evident in the numerous roles he held and the recognition he received. He was a diocesan representative on Appalachia, a past chairman of the Central City Commission, and a former member of the Priests Senate. His commitment to service culminated in receiving an honorary doctorate of laws from Niagara University. Monsignor served as the pastor of St. Teresa's Church in Akron, NY for 21 years and was a dedicated associate director of Catholic Charities for 28 years. His leadership extended to directorship of Buffalo Boys Town for 10 years and membership on the board of Directors of Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Monsignor's contributions to the community were as diverse as they were impactful, reflecting a truly selfless spirit.

Monsignor is preceded in death by his parents, Robert J. and Loretta (Forrest) Williamson; a sister, Ellen F. Williamson; and a nephew, Michael Patrick Sullivan. He is survived by his beloved sister, Mary Sally Sullivan of Rochester, NY; his loving nieces and nephews, Kevin (Debbie) Sullivan, Mark (Kim) Sullivan, Thomas (Teresa) Sullivan, John Robert Sullivan, Suzanne (Julian) Laskowycz, Ann Therese (Craig) Schneider; and fifteen great-nieces and nephews. 

A Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, November 9, 2025 and from 9:30 to 11:00 AM on Monday, November 10th at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 5771 Buell Street, Akron, NY 14001 where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Monday at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at St. Teresa's Cemetery in Akron.
