Mary Jo Schumacher, a beloved figure in her community and a beacon of strength within her family, passed away on August 18, 2025. Mary Jo was known for her deep passion for faith, family, and friends. These three pillars were the foundation of her life and guided her every action. She was a model of perseverance, embodying a legacy of love and kindness that will endure through the memories of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Mary Jo was an active member of the St. Teresa of Avila Church where she served on various committees, including the Bereavement Committee, Event Committee, and Groundskeeping Committee, the last of which she headed for several years. Her love for service extended beyond the church as she found great reward in working at the Akron Newstead Food Pantry. In her leisure time, she savored the outdoor beauty of the Thousand Islands, going camping and fishing. She also cherished long scenic drives with her husband Tony, exploring the breadth and depth of New York state. Mary Jo was also an avid bowler and sang in the church choir for many years.
Besides her husband of almost 50 years, Tony Schumacher, Mary Jo is survived by her children, Steve Schumacher and Marie (Ron) Peters, her grandson, Ryan Schumacher; her father Joseph Caprio and her siblings, Joe Caprio, Dan (Lori) Caprio, Mike (Alana) Caprio, Cherie Sugg, Theresa (Thomas) Baker. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Constance (Connie) Caprio.
Family and friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, August 22, 2025. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 23rd at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 5771 Buell Street, Akron, NY.
