Mardell F. Sundown, of Basom, New York, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025. Born on December 5, 1949, in Alabama, NY, Mardell was a loving and passionate woman who dedicated her life to the causes she believed in most.
Mardell dedicated her career to the Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force, where her passion for the environment shone through every day. She was a proud member of the Snipe Clan of the Tonawanda Indian Reservation and the Tonawanda Women's Singing Society, always immersing herself in her culture and community. Despite her many commitments, what mattered most to Mardell were her grandchildren. She was their biggest fan, always present at their sporting events, offering her unwavering support and love.
Mardell is survived by her beloved daughter, Brenda (Arlyn) Jonathan, her loving sisters, Janette (Darwin) Hill, Annette Tahamont, Rhonda Harjo and brother, Randy Ground. She was a proud grandmother to Kelvin, Ryder, and Kloey Jonathan, and a fond aunt to many nieces and nephews. Mardell was predeceased by her parents, Roger Sundown and Rubena Logan, and her siblings, Maxine Parker, Dorothea Sundown, Janice Hallett, Charlene Sundown, Wilfred Ground, Winnifred Stansblack, and Tina Ground.
Mardell's life was a testament to the power of love and dedication. Her memory will serve as a beacon of inspiration for everyone who knew her. We invite you to share your memories of Mardell to her memorial page, so we may all remember the love and joy she brought into our lives.
