James Edward DeYoung passed away peacefully in the early morning of May 20, 2023. He was born on September 27, 1956 to the late Paul and Evelyn (Etzold) DeYoung.
Jim graduated from Akron Central School in 1974 and studied turf grass management at the University of Massachusetts.
He ran Dande Farms Country Club as the Superintendent for 34 years, mentoring many young men along the way. He was unanimously named the WNY Superintendent of the year for 2008. During the winter months he plowed snow and shoveled sidewalks.
He selflessly served on the Akron Central School board for many years with a focus on ensuring quality education for Akron’s young people.
He was a hobby farmer, growing sweet corn that he shared in abundance with the Akron community. He was an avid hunter, particularly turkeys and deer; he taught many young people the ways of the woods and respect for nature. Jim would make and share gallons of sweet apple cider every fall.
He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Akron, always there fixing something or serving as a trustee. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Jim was an active member of the Akron Lion’s club, serving as the chaplain.
In the Spring of 2012 he suffered a traumatic brain injury that nearly ended his life. He was able to partially recover due to the power of prayer and support from the Akron community.
A devoted husband, father, and family man, Jim is survived by his loving wife Penelope (née Childs); his children, Jeffrey (Kathryn) DeYoung and Jennalee (Aaron) White; his grandchildren, Simon White, Henry DeYoung, Solomon White, Nehemiah White, Raven DeYoung, and Jesse White; his siblings David (Karen) DeYoung, Elizabeth (Roger) Miller, and Carole DeYoung. He is also survived by multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins.
