Donald Holmes

Donald Holmes of Akron passed suddenly on February 6, 2023. Born on April 4, 1942 to the late Lynn and Shirley (Webster) Holmes in Warsaw, NY.

Don obtained his degree from Buffalo State University and was a teacher for many years at Geneseo. He wore many hats in the Akron/Newstead community throughout his life having lived there since 1980. Don was the president, treasurer, and trustee of the Newstead Historical Society; former treasurer of the Newstead Fire Company; former town supervisor for ten years; former president of the chamber of commerce and an election inspector. Don also owned DC Holmes Greenhouse for many years. He loved gardening, history, his cats, his community, and his family.

Donald is survived by his sister, Virginia Cochran of GA; nieces, Cheryl (David) Dickerson and Samantha (Charles Bufford) McDaniel; three grand nieces and nephews, 9 great-grand nieces and nephews and his dear friends, Jim Owen and Jayne Little.

Visitation will be from 4-8 PM on Friday February 10th, 2023 with Funeral Services at 11 AM on Saturday, February 11th at Ross Funeral Home of Akron, LLC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Don’s memory to the Newstead Historical Society or the Newstead Fire Company.
