Dennis Sarow Obituary

Dennis Sarow, of Akron, New York, formerly of Tonawanda and Florida, entered into rest on May 26, 2022, after a brief illness.  He was born on May 11, 1956 and was 66 at the time of his death.

Sarow was a 1974 Kenmore West graduate.  He moved to Florida, where he lived for more than two decades before returning to Western New York in the early 1990s and becoming involved with high school athletics.

He was a leader in local football and softball at the high school and college levels.  He became part of the softball staff at Kenmore West in 1993 and held several positions for the next 25 years including assistant coach, statistician, equipment and uniform procurer, and planner of the softball program’s annual spring training trip to Florida.  He also coached for the Nichols School in Buffalo for a few seasons.

He was assistant softball coach at Hilbert College from 2018 to 2020.  Sarow coordinated and facilitated summer softball travel teams, was a volunteer softball coach for the Empire State Games, was the commissioner and vice president of the Niagara Frontier Girls Softball Association from 2007 to '15. In addition to working with the Section VI softball committee from 2005 to '15, he was also secretary of the Niagara Frontier League from 2000 to '15, according to his bio on the Hilbert website.

He chaired the Connolly Cup committee, a committee that selects nominees and the votes for an honor that is Western New York’s version of the Heisman Trophy, given annually to the top high school football player.  He was also a voter for The Buffalo News’ high school football polls.

When founder of the Western New York High School Sports Football Awards Dick Gallagher, passed away in 2020, Sarow worked to make sure the banquet continued.

Sarow previously served as the Commissioner of the Niagara Frontier Girls Softball Association (NFGSA) and was the Vice President from 2007-15. He held over-lapping roles as the Secretary for the Niagara Frontier League high school league from 2000-15 and was a member of the Section VI softball committee for ten years from 2005-15.

In addition to his involvement with local football and softball organizations, Sarow enjoyed watching the Buffalo Bills, attending New York Yankees games with his sons, and spending time with his family.

Sarow is survived by his two sons, Dennis and Bryan, who live in Texas.Service information to be announced at a later date.
