Charlene A. Sundown, a lifelong resident of Basom, New York, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025, just a few months shy of her 80th birthday. Born on May 7, 1945, in Buffalo, NY, Charlene was admired for her supportive nature and her deep commitment to her family, friends, and the Tonawanda Indian Reservation community.
Having worked diligently as a bookkeeper until her retirement, Charlene was known for her dedication and precision. She was a proud member of the Snipe clan and the Tonawanda Women Singing Society of the Tonawanda Indian Reservation. In her leisure time, Charlene found joy in supporting local sports, often spotted watching Lacrosse and basketball games. Her competitive spirit shone through during family and friends gatherings, where she enjoyed playing corn hole, always fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and fun.
Charlene was the beloved wife of Alden Thompson for 40 years and a loving mother to Leigh and Dawn Thompson. She was a cherished grandmother to Ryan, Brody, Jesse, Lileigh, and Coyee, and a proud great-grandmother to Kyson. Charlene is also survived by her siblings Janette (Darwin) Hill, Annette Tahamont, Mardell Sundown, Rhonda (Thomas) Harjo, and Randy Ground, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roger and Rubena Sundown, and her siblings Maxine Parker, Dorothea "Snookie" Sundown, Janice Hallett, Brenda Sundown, Ricky Ground, Vicki Standsblack, Wilfred Ground, Jr., and Tina Ground.
A Visitation will be held at 665 Bloomingdale Rd., Basom, NY until the time of the Funeral Service at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, February 18. A Long House Service will follow at 2:00 PM. Charlene will be laid to rest at the Long House Cemetery. In memory of Charlene, we encourage you to share your favorite moments and upload photos to her memorial page.
