John Matthew Sowinski

February 27, 1930 ~ January 17, 2018 (age 87) 87 Years Old

John Matthew Sowinski of Akron entered into rest on January 17, 2018 surrounded by the love of his family. He was born February 27, 1930 to the late John and Mary (Cvitanovich) Sowinski.

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who always put his family first. He was an accomplished woodworker and his home and those of his children are filled with beautiful, special pieces that he crafted. John was a doer and a maker who spent much of his life crafting. There seemed to be nothing that he couldn’t make or fix if he put his mind and hands to it. He loved the outdoors and nature, which may have been nurtured in him at an early age as a member of the Boy Scouts. He was a veteran having served two years in the United States Navy. After leaving the Navy, he met Patricia Hart and the two married in August of 1951. They had more than 66 years together and were always there for each other. They raised four children and had 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Their love for each other extended to all their family and set an example of care and devotion.

John retired in 1991after 41 years at Georgia Pacific in Akron where he was the Lead Mechanic. In 1998, he and Pat achieved a long time dream of buying a cottage on Wolfe Lake where they had vacationed with their family since 1964. They spent many happy days at the lake fishing, playing scrabble, and working on their cottage. In John’s later years as he slowed down, he became an avid reader especially enjoying non-fiction books about World War II.

John will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Patricia, as well as his children: David (Mary Ellen Arden) Sowinski, James (Margaret) Sowinski, Catherine (James) Campbell and John (Anne) Sowinski. He is also survived by 9 beautiful grandchildren of whom he was so proud; Jonathan (Lauren) Sowinski, William (Marie) Campbell, Jessica (David) Scordino, Miana Campbell, Abbey Sowinski, Christine Sowinski, Peter Sowinski, Alicia Sowinski, and Ian Campbell. His presence will be missed in the lives of his three special great-grandsons: James Campbell, Dean Sowinski, and Alexander Campbell.

John is also survived by a sister Mary (late Rudi) Kobus of Orchard Park, a brother Robert (late Ruth) Sowinski of Florida, and a sister Margie (Paul) Morrot of Florida: brothers-in-law, Richard (late Rose) Hart, Philip (Judy) Hart, and Dennis (Cheryl) Hart as well as many nieces and nephews. John's brother, Joe (Karen) Sowinski predeceased him.
