Jean D. McKenzie

July 4, 1950 ~ May 2, 2017 (age 66) 66 Years Old

Jean D. McKenzie, whose service as a U.S. Navy nurse was part of a lifelong career in health care, died May 2, 2017 at her home in Akron.

After graduating from Cheektowaga’s Maryvale High School in 1968, Ms. McKenzie continued her studies at the former Edward J. Meyer Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Buffalo. In her post-Navy years, she worked at Bremerton Navy Hospital, Tacoma General Hospital, and the Cardiac Clinic in Washington.

Ms. McKenzie, 66, returned to Western New York a few years ago, settling in Akron, the community where her mother’s family once lived. There she was active in the First Baptist Church, where she helped organize and display artifacts for the church’s 200th anniversary. She was an avid reader and traveler, loved dogs and enjoyed needlepoint.

Ms. McKenzie was the daughter of the late William and Katherine (Wright) McKenzie. She is survived by a brother, William, of Pawlet, Vt.; a sister, Laurel, of Poway, Calif.; five nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great nephews; aunts, Elizabeth Wright of Akron and Delores Wright of Tucson, Ariz., and many cousins.

Services will be held at the First Baptist Church, Main Street Akron at 10:00 Saturday morning, May 6th.  Burial will be in the Clarence Fillmore Cemetery.
