Beverly Fish Obituary

Beverly Fish (Shuler) passed away on March 8, 2024, at the age of 94. As the mother of three daughters and a believer in the strength of women, it is notable that she passed on International Women’s Day. Born on December 7, 1929, in Canastota, NY, Beverly was a smart, humble, and generous woman who touched many lives with her kindness.

Beverly was an avid reader, a passion that began early in life and remained constant throughout her years. Her love of literature and thirst for knowledge led her to graduate high school at age 16, in the top of her class and receive one of five state scholarships offered in Madison County. She received a Bachelor’s Degree from the State University of New York at Oswego and returned to college as an adult, earning a Master of Education Degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Beverly's love for travel often intertwined with her passion for literature. Her favorite book was Lost Horizon inspiring her travel to all seven continents and over 50 countries around the world. Though she enjoyed her travels she often said “It’s not the places you go in life, it’s the people you meet along the way”.  Her most cherished moments were the time spent with her family and friends. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, always putting her family's needs before her own.

Beverly was a lifelong elementary school teacher, teaching in New York districts in Rochester, Canastota and DeRuyter. She spent the second half of her career at the Alden School District in Alden, NY teaching fourth grade and subsequently reading, where she made a considerable impact on the lives of countless young students.

Beverly is predeceased by her husband, David Fish, to whom she was married in 1953. She is survived by her daughters, Margaret, Marilyn (William) Stiefel, and Marcia Fish, and her grandchildren David Thayer (Nichole), Liam Stiefel, Maggie Stiefel, Jack Stiefel, and Marie Stiefel, great-grandson Oliver Thayer, and numerous “adopted” daughters and sons. Also preceding her in death were her parents, William and Dorothy Shuler (Wilson), her brother, Frederick (Barbara) Shuler and her grandson Thomas Thayer.
