James B. Schmatz

December 21, 1929 ~ March 20, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old

James B. Schmatz passed away on March 20, 2017. He was born in Dunkirk, NY on December 21, 1929 to the late Ferdinand and Elsie (Burns) Schmatz.

Jim served our country in the Navy from 1950 to 1953. He earned a Masters Degree and worked as an arbitrator for the New York State Teachers' Association. He met and married Ruth (Wiggins) Schmatz and they raised six children together. They moved from the Adirondaks to Akron ten years ago. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and the Boy Scouts of America. Jim loved people and was well liked by everyone he met.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years Ruth Schmatz; cherished father of Jim (Lorraine) Schmatz, Tom (Linda) Schmatz), Mike (Shelly) Schmatz, Helen (Tony) Warren, Ann (John) Burden, Nancy (Bob) Levett; dear brother of Mike (Crystal) Schmatz, Janet Cadwallader, Mary Nicholson. 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive him. Jim is predeceased by a brother Phil Schmatz;a sister Elizabeth (Ray) Hadley and a brother-in-law Dave Cadwallader. 

Friends and relatives may call from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 24, 2017 at Ross Funeral Home of Akron, LLC, 10 Eckerson Avenue, Akron. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila R.C. Church, 5771 Buell Street, Akron, NY. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Jim's memory to Hospice Buffalo.
